Maybe that's a symptom of a franchise that's never quite pulled off defense the way it's honed the offensive game. What I want to see in a 25-year anniversary may not be what anyone else wants to see.Īs far as actual complaints go, the defensive game feels more limited than ever this year, pitted against a stronger offensive running game.
That's just spit-balling, though, not really complaining. As it stands, there's lots of nods to older games in the loading screens, and there's the option to pick legendary players and some old-school uniforms, but it feels like a 25th anniversary could have, and should have, gone further. That would have felt like a real celebration of progress. Or a game mode where the first game is in old arcade-style graphics and as you win each new game progresses through all the different graphic systems of the past 25 years. Like being able to tell off refs who make bad calls, strike up a shouting match between coaches and the referees, that sort of thing.Īlso, it would have been really fun to have "old school" modes with old-school graphics-minigames, maybe, where you felt like you were back in the late 80's or early 90's. It would be fun if the Kinect was used in more creative ways. But I don't really find myself using them that much. Kinect commands are back, and can be useful for calling audibles. To be fair, I've never really been a fan of Career Mode, so I'm not the best authority here. Nothing here is a huge improvement over last year, but the small changes, such as stumble recovery and better tackle animations, do make a difference.Ĭareer Mode has seen some minor improvements but still feels like a work in progress. The added level of control takes practice, but once you have it down it can be a huge help in the running game, letting you spin and juke your way past enemy lines with style.Īnimations and physics have been tightened up and the Infinity 2 engine holds its own this year even while showing its age. The ability to slow down and execute more precise maneuvers to get the ball downfield is a welcome addition, and the combination of these and short speed bursts can really make the running game feel more dynamic.
